BIOFIT Online Seminar on Retrofitting approaches in the field of Lignocellulosic Ethanol, 25.11.2020 – Presentations available

The online seminar on “Retrofitting Approaches in the field of Lignocellulosic Ethanol” was organised by the BIOFIT project on the 25th of November 2020. It was part of a twin seminar together with the European Technology and Innovation Platform ETIP Bioenergy, whose seminar took place two weeks before (https://etipbioenergy.eu/online-meeting-on-lignocellulosic-ethanol-presentations-and-recording-available).

In 2018, 5.4 million m³ bioethanol were produced in Europe, most of this from sugar or starch containing crops (e.g. sugar beet, grain, and wheat). However, uncertainties regarding the interactions of first-generation biofuel production with the food production and land availability are widely discussed. A supplement and prospectively a replacement of conventional biofuels by second-generation (2G) biofuels is thus politically strongly desired. Add-on solutions of lingocellulosic ethanol technologies for first-generation bioethanol plants offer the potential to overcome uncertain economic viability of stand-alone, greenfield 2G ethanol plants.

Ana Susmozas, researcher at CIEMAT in Spain, gave an exclusive inside to the BIOFIT Case Study together with the ethanol plant of Biocarburantes of Castilla y Leon on a lignocellulosic ethanol retrofit.

Dario Giordano, Green Chemistry Licensing Manager at Versalis/Eni, shared Versalis’ activities in the field of lignocellulosic ethanol and highlights technical retrofit options and advantages.
